Neck Injuries

Chiropractic may also be effective in the treatment of headaches sustained that result from injury, such as whiplash, or repetitive strain to your neck (e.g. prolonged sitting in a poor posture). Known as cervicogenic headache, (originating from the cervical spine) this is usually experienced as a dull aching pain that is felt at the base of the neck or on one or both sides of your head.


There are several different types of migraine. In many instances people suffer with a severe headache that is accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, visual disturbances and sensitivity to light or sound. These symptoms may last for a few hours or for some can endure over a number of days. Problems affecting the joints and muscles of the neck may be contributory factors in migraine. By assessing you and treating the affected joints chiropractors are able to improve joint function and reduce the stress on the muscles and ligaments.

Stress can be one of the triggers for muscular pain in the neck and cervicogenic headaches. Whilst chiropractic usually benefits, better results are obtained from treatment when stressful habits are changed. Certain food and drinks may also be related to headaches in some people. What if it’s something serious?

Only a very small percentage of headaches are caused by serious problems. Your chiropractor will give you a thorough examination and take a full history from you. If your chiropractor then feels that chiropractic treatment is not appropriate for the cause of your headache, you will be referred to your GP or an appropriate specialist.
