From birth to old age we can all potentially suffer with back pain or pains in other joints. Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the muscle and skeletal systems that may cause pain and disability. Although chiropractic is best known for its treatment of spinal complaints it is actually so much more.
In 2010, the UK evidence report by Professor Gert Bronfort on the ‘Effectiveness of Manual Therapies’ was published. It concluded that spinal manipulation/mobilisation is effective in adults for acute, subacute, and chronic low back pain; for migraine prevention and cervicogenic headache, cervicogenic dizziness, and a number of upper and lower extremity joint conditions. Thoracic spinal manipulation/mobilisation is effective for acute/subacute neck pain, and, when combined with exercise, cervical spinal/manipulation is effective for chronic neck pain. In October of the same year a further review by Bronfort found favourable evidence regarding manipulation for radiating leg pain.
